The upcoming holidays may not be exactly what we are used to for our families. As we await Santa’s arrival, let’s bake cookies for Christmas Eve, while embracing the past.
- Many families cook or bake a passed down recipe and include it in their holiday dinner
- Take it a step further this holiday season
- Find a recipe passed down from your grandparents or great-grandparents and recreate it for your own family
- If you are lucky, you will have a hand-written copy of the recipe so ask your mom, grandma or great-grandma
- I have a hand-written recipe book from my great-grandmother, born in 1894 and she passed away when I was 15
- I have many memories of her and one of them was her always baking us gingersnap cookies whether it was December or July
- These cookies are a perfect snack for Santa!
Gingersnap Cookies
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon ground ginger
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 egg
¼ cup molasses
½ cup cinnamon sugar
- Mix all dry ingredients together and make sure to sift them
- In a pot, bring to boiling butter, brown sugar, egg and molasses
- When boiled, gradually mix in the dry ingredients until cookie dough is created
- In your hand, round the dough into balls
- Roll the dough balls in the cinnamon sugar
- Set oven to 350 degrees and bake for approximately 10 minutes
- The tops of the cookies will start to ‘crack’ and you will know they are ready
